Civil Engineer Job Description


A civil engineer designs plans and oversees the construction and maintenance of building structures and infrastructure like roadways, railways, airports, bridges, irrigation projects, power plants, etc. They design and build tall buildings and large structures that can withstand all weather conditions. Civil engineers employ construction companies, rail companies, utility companies, and government departments. They specialize in particular types of projects like marine, power, water, and transport. The work activities of a civil engineer include undertaking technical and feasibility studies including site investigation, use a range of computer software for developing detailed designs, undertaking complex calculations, liaising with clients and a variety of professionals, compiling job specs and supervising tendering procedures, resolving design and development problems, managing budget and project resources, scheduling material and equipment purchases and deliveries, making sure the project complies with legal requirements especially health and safety.

Civil Engineer Job Summary:

We are looking to hire a successful candidate who has a degree in civil engineering and who holds several years of experience working with heavy civil projects ideally with earthwork, excavation, water, or hydro. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring that site operations are performed in compliance with plans and quality standards. They will provide direct support to the site superintendent, acting as a key link between the field and the technical office. The responsibilities include assistance to the supervision of excavation, support of excavation and other activities, survey control, concrete pour cards, order and tracking, tracking material consumption, quantity report, follow and protect geotechnical instrumentation, interface with quality control department, daily reports, preparation of work plans, lift plans and job hazard analysis, and supporting with the schedule for the site in coordination with the superintend.  

Civil Engineer Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Analyzing drawings and maps to inform the direction of projects as well as the overall budget constraints
  • Ensure project feasibility through continual evaluation of structural integrity and design practicality
  • Create designs that utilize a variety of materials
  • Perform and adjust quantity calculations for practical and budgetary purposes
  • Communicate with team members as well as customers and vendors to ensure maximum cohesion and fluidity on projects
  • Forecasts design and construction time frames
  • Inspect project site to ensure they meet relevant codes and are progressing properly

Civil Engineer Skills and Qualification:

  • Bachelor degree in civil engineering
  • Must possess a minimum of 3 years of experience in civil engineering
  • SE license highly desirable
  • Extensive AutoCAD experience
  • Working knowledge of hydroCAD modeling
  • Sound mathematical, scientific, and IT skills
