They need to assist headteachers, directors, and senior leadership teams in controlling the budget planning and financial control and procedures including the development of resource plans. The school accountant advises on compliances with legislation and guidance. The main duties and responsibilities of a school accountant include preparing schools’ annual budget and reviewing and updating, monitoring income and expenditure is related to the school budget, producing monthly reports for the directors, headteachers, and the finance committee, and preparing school accounts for submission to the school auditor.

School Accountant Job Summary:
We are looking to hire a successful candidate who has a master’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field. The school accountant will have a unique opportunity to leverage their accounting skills while contributing to a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the school and its students across the state. You will be reporting to the chief operating director, the accounting manager will prepare and process payroll, track and report on grant expenditure, contracts and use of restricted food, conduct federal, state and local business, tax licensure and complete annual tax reporting, prepare journal entries, ledger and bank account reconciliation, oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable and lead our annual audit. The school accountant will be interacting with member chart school, and they need to manage the financial processing of employee benefits including insurance and retirement, reconciliation with payroll, and reporting.
School Accountant Responsibilities and Duties:
- Preparing the school’s annual budget and updating when needed
- Assisting in producing annual audit and liaising with all parties involved
- Preparing income and expenditure report according to DFE financial regulations and preparing account for the submission
- Producing monthly report to the director, headteacher, and finance committee
- Maintaining and overseeing all bank account including school debit card, completing monthly reconciliation and reporting banking errors to line manager
- Ensuring school financing policy is reviewed and the school meets all financial requirement
- Assisting in preparing accurate VAT accounting and payment so that VAT reclaim return is submitted
- Responsible handling cash including collections and disbursements, banking and security, fundraising and school trips
School Accountant Skills and Qualification:
- Bachelor degree in accounting with experience working with grand funding proposals, awards, accounting, and reporting
- Must possess a minimum of 2 years of experience in a non-profit organization
- Extensive knowledge about GAAP and able to apply accounting principles and government reporting regulations
- Punctual, reliable and must have strong communication skill
- Knowledge about MS Office, QuickBooks, and excel
- Able to work in a team and produce quality output under tight deadlines
- Strong verbal and oral communication skills
